I am majoring in biology and on the premed track. At Emory I have been in research classes that teach you how to write scientific papers. In the science field, writing is used to communicate one’s research typically to an audience of other scientists. Scientific writing is mostly in the form of research papers and poster presentations that discuss an experiment in depth. This style of writing is very technical and must be clear and concise in order to describe the research so it can be understood. People’s opinions and input are not written in these research papers and it is strictly factual information. These research journals often use complex medical terms to describe their scientific findings, which can only be understood by other professionals in the science field. Communicating science material can also reach a broader audience of people who are not experts in this subject. In this case, the scientific writing uses less technical language in order for non-science individuals to also understand the research that is going on.
Scientists conduct experiments to answer a research question in their particular field of interest. During an experiment a scientist must record their data and observations to be used as evidence in order to answer the research question. Evidence is needed in order to support or disclaim any hypothesis that is made before the experiment starts. These research questions are not always answered but many times lab reports and journals are written to explain what the experiment was and the methods they used to gather the data. Regardless of the outcome of the experiment, it is important to report the findings. Scientists should publish all findings so that other people can use their work as a reference for their own experiments. Evidence is extremely important in science and there must be enough data in order to make an accurate conclusion about the experimental study.
